Love Letters to Leonardo
The Love Letters To Leonardo Series began in 2018- 2019 when I lived and studied abroad in Florence, Italy. This period marks a complete departure from any of the work that came before and was a catalyst in both the studio and my life.
The ' Love Letters to Leonardo' series continues and informs much of my various bodies of work since that time to some degree, while it continually evolves.
It began as a response to the city of Florence itself, to the constant influence and presence of history, and to my struggle to escape and engage with certain aspects of time. As much as I am in love with the city of Florence, and consider it my true home - creatively, there was no way to escape how history, art, architecture, art conservation, and my ancestry would creep into my work in the studio. It was as if, they were different personalities, all sitting there, waiting for me to arrive in the studio - like invited guests. And so began my conversation with Leonardo.
As my esteemed colleague, Justin Randolph Thompson puts it:
" These works are a search for coded symbolism that speaks to womanhood, to the visual chaos of memory and the entangled, enveloped and nurtured layers of identity"
